Their perseverance throughout the season comes from the teammate's support. Despite their first round loss to Warner Pacific, the team now knows how to become better for the next year. It's obvious that the first round loss hurts the team emotionally, but not their love for each other and for the game of basketball. It was clear to see this team loves God and they use that as motivation to play hard on the court. Even though it was a short trip, a lot of lessons were learned and the team was given an opportunity to showcase the character of our team.

Tough loss but even tougher character
From day one this has been a season that has tested the players in multiple ways. From being ranked number one in the country to losing seven of their next eleven games to then becoming the regular season MCC champions . Despite all of the tough losses and close victories the team remained consistent. Consistent with their character.
Throughout the tournament, the players and coaches have remained positive despite such a tough season. The coaches and fans have provided a strong support system throughout the season and especially during the NAIA tournament. However, the biggest support is between the players. On and off the court, the team had fun with the enjoying their time in Branson but also challenged each other on the court.

Day 3: Preparation
IWU practiced about ten minutes away from the hotel at the Branson RecPlex. For about an hour they worked out, scheming for tomorrow. It was all about focus for the team as they broke their huddle chanting, “Focus!”

Day 2: More Traveling
The Men’s Basketball Team woke up bright and early this morning and traveled from St. Louis to Springfield, Missouri to practice where the Missouri State Bears play.
After the teams’ scheduled one o’clock practice, the boys showered up and headed to the Bass Pro Shop just down the road. The team walked around for about an hour looking at all of the different items sold in the store. They even witnessed an alligator snapping at one of our cameras as we got close to it!
Now we are on the road traveling to eat the infamous Lambert’s CafĂ© where they throw the rolls at the guests. Keep your head on a swivel and duck!
Day 2: A tale of two teams
As the sun rose in St. Louis, so did the Indiana Wesleyan men's basketball team. After a good night's rest, the guys grabbed their morning breakfast of champions at the hotel and departed for the next stage of their journey. The bus pulled out at 8:15 sharp for about a three hour drive to Missouri State University, where they took part in their final "intense" practice before Wednesday's game.
Assistant Coach Fred Hodson said this practice will be crucial in the final preparation at game speed. This is now the ninth day since the Wildcats lost to St. Francis in the MCC semifinals. But Coach Tonagel believes this group is fresh and has the potential to make a deep run in Branson. So he hasn't made it easy for them.
"We had three really tough practices last week," said senior Derrick Troyer. "We would come in at seven in the morning and shoot free throws, practice in the afternoon, and come in at nine at night and shoot free throws."
Troyer and fellow senior David Peters are making their fourth and final trip to Nationals and are embracing their role as leaders this year. I think Coach Tonagel will be the first to admit that this year has not been the easiest in his coaching career.
After starting the season 9-0, the Wildcats lost nine out of their next fourteen games. They then rattled off six straight conference victories and were somehow able to capture the regular season MCC crown on a tiebreaker with Grace. But they finished the season with two disappointing losses to Taylor on senior night and Saint Francis in the MCC semis.
Couple that with the loss of starter George Jones IV with a torn achilles, and you might think that this team doesn't have much of a chance coming into NAIA's. But as we travel with the team and interact with the guys, I can sense that they are ready to play and prove something. If there is one thing that I have learned about Coach Tonagel teams, it is that his players love to play for him and step up when they need it most.
We haven't always seen that this year, but ultimately the Wildcats are right back here in Branson, in the same position they have been the last four years. Those higher ranked teams all won two games to make it to the Elite Eight. While this group may lack the flash of those teams, they pack a punch of their own. Will this team make it to the knockout round or be knocked out early and Marion bound? It doesn't take Mark Twain to draw that up, but the reality is that either could happen. It's just a matter of which team shows up.

Getting To The Hotel
Just minutes after we arrive in St. Louis, Coach Tonagel and the team traveled to Washington University in St. Louis to practice for about an hour. The men looked focused and ready to play.
They shot around and loaded back onto the bus where Panera Bread was waiting for them.
After they loaded the bus and got ready to go, they took off for the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel. They are staying there for the rest of the night and will head out tomorrow morning for Branson, Missouri.

Off To Branson
The IWU Men's Basketball team took off this morning at 8 a.m. to attend church in Lafayette, Indiana. After church, the men took their team bus to fill up their stomachs at the coveted Beef House in Covington, Indiana.
After dining, they continued on the road down I-70 West towards St. Louis. The team will be staying there for the night and possibly trying to get in a practice before they hit the road again tomorrow morning.
